Intelligent Design

Swiss_us_notes

Spending the night in a country house in the wine country, I woke up at 3 am and couldn’t sleep anymore. The Internet is the best weapon against insomnia so I turned on my laptop and surfed through some blogs. I found this great provocative article by Kathy Sierra about US design vs. Euro Design (“Does US Design Suck?”), in which she makes her case mainly by comparing US banknotes with those of Switzerland. Make sure you read all the comments as well since a lively discussion has evolved around this blog.

Another event, offline, was worth being awake at the crack of dawn: the crack of dawn. Although I am not really much of a nature boy, I was stunned by how suddenly the sun rises and the birds start singing. As a city dweller, I have only rarely experienced this beautiful moment and somewhat forgotten about it. It’s like someone pressing the button, turning the light on, and nature promptly shifts to daytime.

Anyway, it’s really time to go to bed now.

Other countries change sizes of currency based on value too. India is one I'm familiar with. It does make sense. I find the newer U.S. designs are starting to look cheesy every time they add more anti-counterfeit content.
