Reuters has reported today that CBS will invest in virtual world content developer Electric Sheep, hoping to expand its reach beyond the living room. CBS will participate in a $7 million round of financing, which includes existing investors Gladwyne Partners. Electric Sheep develops 3-D properties in Second Life and other virtual worlds.
The deal marks another major boost for 3D online communities: "We believe that all these virtual worlds represent next generation communications platforms," CBS Interactive President Quincy Smith is quoted in the Reuters report. CBS has hired Electric Sheep for several projects including development of "The L-Word in Second Life", and it filmed a commercial inside Second Life to promote the CBS show "Two and a Half Men." Electric Sheep is also developing a Star Trek-themed area for CBS in Second Life.
