Tata have done a remarkable job and I think the key attribute is it's cheap without being "cheap".

The Smart has many similar attributes but costs about the same as a normal car. The Mini is a great car but is an insult to the original, primary flaw is it's large, badly packaged, and heavy. It's just not "mini". The Fiat 500 is also great but not really a successor to the original.

I think the Tata is a closer modern realisation of what both the original 500 and the Mini set out to do.
