Just in time for Thanksgiving, film director Nikolaus Geyrhalter serves a feast that is not easily digested: industrial food production. His documentary Our Daily Bread takes you on a tour of the dizzyingly spectacular landscape of high-tech agriculture in Europe: hermetically sealed chicken hatcheries as sterile as computer chip factories; geospatially precise cultivated fields where crops mature right on cue; utopian factories with frightening Tayloresque efficiencies. No voice-over commentary and no interviews; just some choice music, and the "whirring, clattering, booming, slurping" hydraulic breathing of conveyor belts and heavy machineries. As the film’s synopsis states: "People, animals, crops and machines play a supporting role in the logistics of this system which provides our society’s standard of living."
