This is a great video that sums up the problem (and an overview of the solution) nicely. I think the devil will be in the details of working with each site, but I think the use of standards in inevitable. Just as the wild west went from ad hoc wagon villages to standard towns and cities.
We are working with integrating Data Portability into education via online profiles. Just another piece of the puzzle but we are working away.
